When I first saw the Hallon dress in my feed, I knew it was a dress after my own heart: business in the front 👔, party in the back 🎉, and the perfect canvas to show off a beautiful fabric!
I made this Hallon dress for a wedding in Chicago.
Modifications
I was wise to have muslined this, because I ended up having to make a couple of modifications for the final product! I sewed up my muslin in Size 4 without making any modifications, and struggled with the bust darts. No matter how hard I tried, the bust ended up looking super boxy and pointy.
- I moved the bust dart from the armhole to the side seam - basically copied the bust dart from my trust Willow tank.
- I lowered the arm scye by an inch, which was probably a bit too low
- I lowered the front neckline by an inch
- I used Bella's Built-In Bra Tutorial to add a built-in lining made of power mesh. There's a bit of excess fabric/gathering/rippling at the armpits in the power mesh, perhaps because I didn't sew bust darts into it. I might do that next time so that it follows the shape of the main fabric.
